I hate changing my characters' names. So much so, that since the very beginning of my novel not a single character's name has been changed. Not a single one. But today is the day that my record is broken, because I'm changing some things up in my book. The Foxes are no longer Foxes, but Elves—a completely different species—and that means that Shadowpaw and Rainpelt must be renamed. T.T
Here's my list of possible names for the boys:
Raiden—(pronounced ride-in) thunder and lightning
Shadow—just taking away the 'paw' from Shadowpaw
Rain—taking away the pelt from 'Rainpelt'
And uh... well, that's really it. I also have some other name-related topics for us to discuss: the Fox Packs. They're no longer packs. They need names. I have ideas! You guys have opinions! (I hope so, anyway.)
North Pack—New Haven
West Pack—Riverberg... (I don't really like this one.)
South Pack—Starlight Glade??
East Pack (rip)—Dawnvale
I'm open to any and all suggestions for both topics! Can't wait to see what you guys have to say!
Okay sounds good! Again, we’re all behind ya! We’ll support your writing process and how you develop your world. These things don’t happen over night( at least most of the time. I’ve had a few eureka moments)
Aw, I'm going to miss the Foxes, but I do think that adding in elves could be fun! I can't wait to see how your mythology and world building continues to develop. Raiden sounds like a super cool name- I might have to steal it lol. None of the other names seem particularly suited for either Shadowpaw or Rainpelt though.
Hmm, for the names for the Fox Packs, I like Starlight Glade and Dawnvale, but like Nae said, the others seem a bit generic. And to make the names a bit more relevant, you could make Starlight glade and Dawnvale be named after something that's common there, like a plant. Starflowers or Dawn...flowers? Maybe? But something along those lines.
One thing I’d like to ask: if you’re changing the foxes, are you removing humanimals entirely? Are the humanimals just going to be human or some other mythical race? I liked the humanimals concept in your story, and if it’s changing for the foxes, I feel like it should change for the others too. Don’t worry, there are plenty of shapeshifter creatures in folklore (Nekomata is a cat one for example, since Citrine and Clementine were cats) or you can make an original creature (Felinids is just one I came up with on the spot so it’s not that good).
Also, maybe this is me being silly, but elves usually have a ‘positive connotation’ in modern fantasy, which I feel like would be kind of strange for the supposedly evil people in the forest. One thing you could do is that they call themselves ‘the Elves’ but the others call them ‘Trolls’, ‘Ogres’ or something else which is usually portrayed negatively. That might be interesting.
I’m not that big on the new pack names- they all seem really generic. One thing I like to do is go on a translator of choice (DeepL is my preference) and write ‘city names’ in various languages to get better results. For example, Riverberg would be Stromberg or Flussberg, which I think are a little more unique. Or you could keep the directions and change pack to city, tribe, or something else.
I like Raiden for Rainpelt, but I think Cethin (Celtic name meaning dusky) is a good one for Shadowpaw.
While we’re here, I’d strongly recommend changing Moonshine’s name. I know Luna is probably a quick, simple choice, but there are a lot of names that mean ‘moon’, or are moon dieties which I think are a lot prettier like Lucine, Tsuki, and Diana. Or you could just call her Moon.
Hope this helped and happy writing!
I like the pack names a lot!!! The only thing for consideration is that New Haven is a city or town or something in Connecticut.
As for Ex-Rainpelt and Ex-Shadowpaw, I think Shadow or Nox is cute. For Rainpelt, I agree that Rain is a bit feminine, but I know someone named Rainen (pronounced rain-en) and I think that’d cute too. If not I vote Raiden.
I like how simply you put the names for the packs, and I personally think you should stick with that. It just all fits together really well, you know.
Also, I just had a thought, maybe you can still keep the North, South, West, and East names but instead of Pack how about simply like: The North Valley, The East Mountain, the South Glade, and the Western Wood, for example.
Well, I really don’t have a clue on the pack names. It really depends on the climate. I love the names you picked so far. As for the characters, I think Raiden is a good elvish name. I think Rain sounds like a girls name, to me, but what about Rye? That sounds like a masculine elf name. As for Shadow, maybe you could add something like Shadowwade, or something like that. Or just completely take away Shadow and replace it with something that means night, like Draven( which has several meanings) or Nox. Those are just a couple of suggestions.
