Wow! It's been a while, hasn't it? Moving and starting Eighth Grade has definitely eaten away at my time, but, as the founder of our little community, it's my responsibility to bring some light and life back into this site! So without further ado...
What's your favorite genre to write? What's your favorite genre to read? Do you prefer writing/reading standalones or series?
I love to write fantasy. It was pretty much the only genre I would even look at until this year! I just really love the whimsical and creative elements that are typical in those made-up worlds.
I prefer series, although I'll read a good standalone. I just feel like series allow you to get to know the characters better, you know?
My favorite genre(s) to write would probably fantasy or contemporary fiction(both, possibly, with a hint of romance, possibly). Fantasy because it's FANTASY, I love the different creatures, nature and scenery you can come up with, also the fantastical lifestyle of the character, hehe. Contemporary fiction because I like to write about someone else in the same timeline as me, what they think about, how they live, their morals and whatnot.
When reading, I mainly like fantasy, science fiction, and mystery, but once in a blue moon I'll read contemporary fiction and romance(depends on what the story is about not necessarily the genre).
As for standalones or series, it depends on how good the book is. Lately I've been just reading standalones that were really enjoyable to read and enjoy rereading these separate books, it's a new story each time. Though it's a bit upsetting not being able to see these characters doing something new.
Oooo! I *love* fantasy! I like reading fantasy, and writing fantasy, and reading fantasy, and--okay, you get the point. I love creating fantasy worlds, magic systems, and everything in between, or seeing them unfod in someone else's book. Oh, but a quick note on writing, as long as the main character is traumatized/will be traumatized/life is a lie, I can work with it. :D
On series and standalones: there is nothing I hate more than a standalone with an unresolved romance. It drives me cRaZy. But other than that, standalones are fine, so long as they're good--and the nice thing about standalones is that if you hate the mc but want to know how the story ends, it doesn't take as long to find out (cough Wings of Fire cough). A series, on the other hand, can go on forever and ever and ever--but, like Leah said, you get to know the characters better. I personally like a trilogy or a no-more-than-like-ten-book series. something to keep you going, but not endlessly.
I love fantasy too!! Although my first love was science fiction and then fantasy and science fiction have been my two primary genres I love to mix together into several different good stories.
