Which Cover is Better?

Hello all,

I was wondering if you guys could offer me some help with the cover for one of my current WIPs. It’s a ‘spy’ thriller that is set in another world, but this world doesn’t have any magic, or advanced technology, and is set in a time period similar to the 1950s/60s on Earth. Here is a brief description of the plot:

In a country lead by an authoritarian dictator, a member of the secret police, Nikolai (he doesn’t have a full name yet), is tasked with going undercover in a rebel group in order to uncover the true identities and agendas of its members. However, as he spends more time in the group, he realises that the government has lied to him, and becomes hooked on their idea of revolution, deciding to destroy the corrupt system from the inside.

I have two possible designs which are pretty much the same, aside from having different fonts. I’d really appreciate it if you told me which one was your favourite, or if there are any ways you think I can make the design itself better.

Cover One

I like the element of handwriting in this one, but at the same time, it makes it look a little bit like a romance novel to me (there is possibly going to be a romantic subplot between Nikolai and a member of the group if that affects your decision). I think this one looks nicer than the other, but I feel like the other is more suited for its genre.

Cover Two

This one just has the typewriter fonts, but I though that the contrast between them might look good. I’m not entirely happy with the ‘neat’ font, so I’ll probably change it, but it will be a font in a similar style.

So those are the two covers. Like I mentioned, I’m more than happy to hear any advice or opinions that you have about them, on what you like, or think could be changed.

Thanks in advance and happy writing!

First of all, great blurb! Second, is Wildfowl a pen name or are some people graced with wildly interesting surnames??

As for the covers, I do agree that the handwriting makes it look sort of romance-y, but I think that if you just change the handwriting font it could still work. And the neat font doesn't do anything for the vibe, so I'd say change that to perhaps handwriting? Maybe? On Google Docs the font 'Kalam' might work, (my favorite handwriting font, but to each her own) and you could of course do some exploring on your own. I'd say whatever you do steer clear of cursive, because that would give a romanic feel.

Hope this helps and happy writing!
