-Fashion History-
In the very first installment of this series we will be talking about.....
WHIMSIGOTH
๐๐ธ๏ธ๐ฎ (aka Whimsy Gothic) ๐๐ธ๏ธ๐ฎ
Now this is a personal favorite as I gravitate to this style of clothing the most!
What is Whimsigoth? To put it simply, it is a style that infuses gothic and bohemian influences. If we break down the word into two, whimsical and goth, it perfectly defines what this style is. Whimsical coming from the magical quality of the style, such as, flowy skirts and sleeves, stone jewelry, sun and moon motifs, and chunky black boots. The second word 'goth' you may initially think comes from the goths of the 70s and 80s with their teased hair, intense black eyeliner and leather jackets. However the term 'goth' in whimsigoth refers to gothic art and architecture of the Middle Ages as well as taking influence from the Renaissance.
The History:
This style peaked in the late 1980s to the late 1990s, but we are seeing a resurgence of it on social media. At the time of peak popularity, this style drew a lot of inspiration from the 70s with flowy skirts, dresses, and celestial motifs. An artist that was the ultimate inspiration for whimsigoth would be Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. Her eclectic and whimsical sensibilities was the catalyst for the fashion in the 80s and 90s. Stevie Nicks' fashion sense along with the resurgence of spiritual movements in the 70s brought this style to life. It can also be seen in a lot of media during its peak. Some examples include but are not limited too, Practical Magic, Phoebe Buffay from Friends, The Craft, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. In today's time, we can see its influences from different celebrities, such as, Florence Welch from Florence + The Machine, FKA Twigs, and Helena Bonham Carter.
If you care to dress in this style:
This way of dressing is fairly simple and doesn't require a lot of money and clothing. Thrifting and vintage shopping is the best way to go because you'll be able to find unique pieces that incapsulate the style. The color palette for this look consists of lots of jewel tones, for example, emerald green, deep blues and purples, etc. This particular style includes fabrics like mesh, velvet, and lace. Accessories includes chokers, corsets, and jewelry with celestial and floral motifs. Layering also adds a lot of texture to a whimsigoth outfit.
That completes the first installment! I hope you learned something and enjoyed! Let me know what you would like to see next!
