Sorry I'm a little late today, I was out and about.
Does your protagonist have any family heirlooms in their possession?
Citrine has many of these heirlooms, but some have only been passed down once. For example: her mother's viola and diaries. She also has her father's sword, which belonged to her great grandfather, and the wooden chest that her mother's diaries are in is from her grandmother.
My character, Cadence Davenger treasures her mother’s violin as well as pictures of her parents and brother before they died. She later retrieves her brother’s compass which leads her to believe that he’s alive and goes on a quest to find him.
This is for my newest, but also technically my oldest, WIP- Beanspice: a Fairy’s Favourite- or BaFF for short.
Llywelyn/Cethin, later Selwyn (it’s complicated), has a pocket watch that is a family heirloom, and a bracelet with his name on it that his father made for him. He treasured both of them dearly, but one night, they both disappeared without a trace.
Alwen has an enchanted jewel that was once her great grandmother’s. Since this is one of the few things she has left of her family, and since it helps her with magic, she always has it with her.
Having been kidnapped by fairies when he was only a toddler, Morys only ever had faded memories of his parents. However, when he grows up, he sneaks into the records of kidnapped children, he discovers both his real name and the names of his parents, which he treasures like sacred artefacts. While he was trying to find his name, he met and befriended Alwen, who, early into the story, gives him a family heirloom, and something with his name on it, in an attempt to convince him to escape and join her in the Seelie Court.
